THE KENNEL CLUB OF PHILIDELPHIA’S NATIONAL DOG SHOWS
2013 FACT SHEET
WHAT: The National Dog Shows, Philadelphia’s annual celebration of dogdom dating back to 1879, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. This American Kennel Club (AKC) - sanctioned cluster, is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country.
Over 170 different breeds, all the rarely seen exotic breeds and the popular poodles, retrievers and terriers, will be among some 2,000 of the nation’s top dogs to compete for Best in Show honors in a competition open to all registered purebred dogs.
FORMAT: The National Dog Shows weekend is one of only five “benched” format competitions remaining in the United States. “Benched" format means that the show is open to the public and the canines are on display all day long so that attendees can see the dogs up close and meet their owners to learn about the breeds and about responsible dog ownership.
WHEN: The National Dog Shows are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16, and Sunday, Nov. 17. Doors open at 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday with Best In Show judging scheduled for 5:30 p.m. each day in the stadium ring at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks.
WHERE: The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center is located in Oaks, PA., adjacent to historic Valley Forge, PA, and just 15 miles west of Philadelphia.
WHO: Purebred dogs from over 170 American Kennel Club (AKC) sanctioned breeds, including many of America’s elite show dogs and their owners and handlers competing for Best of Breed, First in Group and the ultimate title of Best in Show.
NEW BREEDS: This year’s new breeds will be announced.
THERAPY DOG TEAM: A team of three dynamic young canines – Dogues de Bordeaux named Li’l Abner and Stella and a Staffordshire Terrier mix named Vivian – will step forward this year to carry on the tradition of the National Dog Show Presented by Purina Therapy Dog Ambassador program. The trio, all from the Philadelphia area, make regular visits to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House where they actively participate in therapy work with patients and families.
